Grade 1 Road Maps

Your Space Music Lessons, following consultation with teachers, has now produced some guides for parents and pupils to help manage expectations about music learning development whilst preparing for an ABRSM Grade 1 exam.

Prior to this stage of the Grade 1 work, each pupil must learn first the coordination, basic techniques and note reading skills involved in playing an instrument or singing, these are the crucial building blocks for the pupil’s music development and it’s important to get it right. Teachers will know best when a pupil is ready to start Grade 1. After starting the grade 1 work, it can sometimes take up to a year to be ready to take the exam.

Below your will find the elements for each ABRSM Grade 1 exam across a range of instruments and singing and what the expected competencies will be at this stage of development.  It is hoped that pupils and parents may use their particular road map to help pin-point their progress.  The sheet may be printed out, put up on a wall, you can tick things off as you go if you wish!

Teachers may share these guides and then continue to build confidence and competency in their students until they reach a level when they decide it is time to enter for the exam. We hope you will find this useful!
