Profile

Laura comes from a very musical family, and with a violin teacher as a mother she started this from the age of 4, and then the piano from age 6. A day off practicing was a rare luxury growing up! Her hometown of Teesside provided her with a varied musical diet of ensembles, and she was leading her local youth orchestras and a member of the NCO during her teenage years, and won Darlington's Young Musician of the Year in her final year of college. By the time she went to York University to study music, she had gained performance and teacher diplomas in both instruments, together with grade 8 saxophone and music theory.

Since graduating in 2008 she has settled in York and spends her weekdays teaching privately and in schools for North Yorkshire Music Service, and weekends performing up and down the country. Holidays are spent travelling, hiking, and renovating her house. - recent projects have included building a soundproof studio in the garden for her husband who is a professional drummer, where she hopes to achieve peace and quiet inside the house someday soon! Her main band is Blackbeard's Tea Party, a folk rock band which is well known on the folk and ceilidh circuit, and has played at prestigious festivals such as Glastonbury, Fairport's Cropredy Convention and the Rainforest World Music festival in Borneo.

Laura loves teaching all ages, from beginners to advanced. She considers herself a bit of a 'technique geek' and likes to ensure her pupils are building a good foundation. She uses the ABRSM syllabus as a basis for most learning, but is relaxed and very pupil-led, and often branches into folk music and pop&rock to give a well-rounded and fun education. Due to her performing career she is also a folk fiddle specialist and can include this into her violin pupils' repertoire, as well as teaching adults who specifically come to her for fiddle lessons.

'Laura is such a fantastic teacher, she is positive, encouraging and so inspiring for O - her lessons are a real highlight of the week and she has really grown in confidence'  Parent voice.
